"In the game of Dunk-tank, a participant, usually a young woman, sits on a wooden platform suspended above a huge tank of water.  A contestant buys a ticket and is given several baseballs to throw at the target which is rigged to the platform in such a manner that if the target gets a direct hit, the platform falls away like the trap door on a gallows, and the young woman falls into the tank. Presumably the prize to the successful contestant is the satisfaction of dunking the young woman..."
